VERY IMPORTANT QUESTIONS YOU MUST ASK BEFORE SIGNING UP FOR ACTING CLASSES AT ANY SCHOOL :
You are about to invest your time and money for acting lessons. So be sure you're getting the expert professional instruction you are paying for and expect.
Ask these questions.
- Who is the instructor? Or instructors?
- What credentials does he/she (or they) have to teach this class?
- Who did he/she study under or gain experience? Experience as an actor or casting director does not guarantee the person is a qualified teacher. Very few athletes make good coaches.
- Which producers, directors, and other acting coaches has the teacher worked with? When? Will they recommend your acting school? The answer to this question will reveal volumes.
- When may I talk with the teacher personally regarding what will be taught in the class?
- How many actors are in each class? It is critical to be certain the actor is going to get the on camera time and attention needed to learn.
- How long does the class last? One, two or three hours and for how many weeks? You want to know the total number of hours of instruction not the total number of classes to make a fair comparison.
- Which actors who studied at your school for more than one class are booking?
- How many classes did the actor take at your school? Believe it or not some schools take credit for an actor’s successful career even though the actor may have taken just one class there. (Ask us about this one.)
- May I please have contact information of former students and other industry professionals for references? If a school is unwilling to provide this there is a reason.
The last thing you as an actor or parent want to say at the conclusion of a class or series of classes is, “What a waste of money and time!”
So, ask questions.

After Kevin and Dennis's scene was finished, Dennis called me aside from the other children and mothers to let me know that he was not looking forward to working with a 7 year old. He said kids are sometimes difficult to work with, especially if they are not prepared. He then repeatedly complemented me on Kevin's behavior and acting abilities during the shoot. He told me that Kevin had been coached wonderfully by a great acting coach. Dennis said that he loved working with Kevin and it would be his pleasure to do so again in the future.
